Internet today
India has the second highest number of Internet users in the world. As of 30 September 2023, there are
918.19 million total internet subscribers in India. Of these 881.08 million are wireless subscribers and
37.11 million wired subscribers.
The overall net penetration is 65.89% Urban net penetration is 110.3% and Rural net penetration is
41.72%.
The broadband game is now dominated by private players, for both wired and wireless, with JIO and Airtel
dominating the sector.
The average monthly data consumption per user is 20.27GB as of March 2024.
Internet usage today
Despite the narrowing gap, women fall behind men in internet usage.
More than 40% of all payments done are digital with UPI having a lion’s share.
OTT consumption is the top way Indians use the internet.
20% of users only watch video over the internet and not on cable/satellite tv.
26% of online shopper avail cash on delivery.
